Used Renault Zoe Buying Guide
The Zoe (2013-2024) did more than any car to normalise electric motoring in Britain, and depreciation has made it the cheapest meaningful EV on the used market. The catch: version details matter enormously, so this is a car you buy with the spec sheet in one hand and the battery paperwork in the other.
Engines and trims
Battery capacity defines the eras: early 22kWh cars (real range 80-100 miles), the 41kWh R90/R110 from 2017 (130-160 real miles), and the final ZE50 52kWh cars from 2020 (180-230 official) — the ones most worth buying now. Trim ran Expression, Dynamique, Iconic and GT Line. Crucially, check the charging hardware: many Zoes fast-charge on AC brilliantly but some versions lack DC rapid charging (it was optional on ZE50s as the 50kW CCS port) — decide whether that matters for your journeys before falling for a price.
What to check before buying
Battery ownership first: many early cars were sold with a leased battery — monthly fees continue with the car — while later ones were bought outright. Confirm in writing which applies; an owned battery is simpler and affects value. Then health: a State of Health report is essential, and a full-charge range test tells the truth. Check both cables (the AC lead and granny cable), inspect for the kerbing and scuffs of urban life, and confirm the R-Link/EasyLink screen behaves. It’s worth knowing the 2021-on facelift scored poorly in Euro NCAP retesting after safety kit was trimmed — families comparing options should factor it against rivals. Complete the file with service history, the MOT mileage trail, and a full car check; at these prices the checks cost proportionally little and save the classic used-EV mistakes covered in our used electric bargains guide.
Running costs
Pennies per mile home-charged, minimal servicing, cheap tyres — offset only by any battery lease payment, which is why that question leads everything. Insurance is supermini-low.
Verdict
A ZE50 Iconic with an owned battery, healthy SoH and the CCS rapid option is a superb-value city EV. Buy the battery paperwork before you buy the car, and the Zoe is the bargain it appears to be.
