The Austral (2023 on) is Renault’s Qashqai-sized family SUV and the Kadjar’s replacement, sold in the UK almost exclusively as the E-Tech 200 full hybrid. Ex-fleet and PCP returns are now feeding the used market at tempting money for a car this fresh.
Engines and trims
One drivetrain does the work: the E-Tech 200 pairs a 1.2 turbo petrol with two electric motors and a clutchless multi-mode gearbox for smooth, mostly-electric town progress. Trim runs Evolution, Techno and Esprit Alpine (earlier Iconic versions exist); Techno is the value target, while Esprit Alpine adds four-wheel steering on many cars — a genuine manoeuvrability party trick that shrinks the car in town. The sliding rear bench and generous boat of a boot cover family duty well.
What to check before buying
Drive for hybrid smoothness first: the multi-mode gearbox should shuffle ratios and power sources without clunks or hesitation — any shunting deserves a dealer investigation before purchase, not after. Confirm no hybrid warning lights, healthy 12V behaviour (infotainment reboots can trace to it), and current software on the OpenR Link system. On four-wheel-steer cars, listen for rear-axle noises on full lock and check rear tyre wear patterns. The usual young-car checks complete it: kerbed alloys, parking-sensor function, powered tailgate, and interior wear consistent with the mileage. Ex-fleet cars can be great buys but verify the service history is complete rather than assumed, read the MOT record once old enough, and run a full provenance check for finance and damage markers.
Running costs
Expect low-to-mid 50s mpg in mixed driving — town use flatters it further. Insurance sits mid-pack for the class, consumables are mainstream, and hybrid components carry Renault’s longer drivetrain cover on younger cars — check what remains on any example.
Verdict
As a used buy the Austral is a quietly excellent Qashqai alternative: more economical than most rivals, well equipped, and cheap for what it is once the first owner has absorbed the depreciation. Confirm the gearbox behaves and the history’s complete, and it’s an easy car to recommend.
