Used Renault Megane Buying Guide
Megane now means two different cars on the used market: the conventional fourth-generation hatch and Sport Tourer estate (2016-2022), and the Megane E-Tech Electric (2022 on) — a stylish EV hatchback that took the name upmarket. Both deserve attention at today’s prices, for different buyers.
Engines and trims
Combustion cars ran TCe 130/140 petrols, dCi 110/115 diesels, and R.S. 280/300 hot hatches at the top. Trim moved from Expression+ through Dynamique and GT Line to Iconic and R.S. Line. The E-Tech Electric brought a 60kWh battery with around 280 miles official (a 40kWh version existed abroad; UK cars are almost all 60kWh) in Equilibre, Techno and Iconic trims — Techno is the sweet spot.
What to check before buying
Combustion cars follow familiar Renault rules: EDC dual-clutch autos must shuffle cleanly at low speed, diesels prefer motorway lives, and the 1.2-family petrols in earliest cars warrant the oil-level check. R.S. models are enthusiast cars — insist on specialist history, inspect tyres, brakes and the front rims for track-day evidence, and treat modifications cautiously. On the E-Tech Electric, run the full EV checklist: battery State of Health report, cable inventory, rapid-charge test (it peaks around 130kW), and software currency on the excellent OpenR Link system. Cabin quality is strong, so heavy wear signals hard use. Whatever the version: complete service history, coherent MOT mileages, and a full provenance check before committing — our used-EV bargains guide explains why the electric car’s depreciation is your opportunity.
Running costs
TCe petrols return mid-40s mpg, diesels high-50s. The E-Tech Electric costs pennies per mile from a home charger and enjoys light servicing needs. R.S. ownership costs hot-hatch money — tyres, brakes, insurance — and rewards it in kind.
Verdict
The E-Tech Electric Techno is the headline: a genuinely desirable EV now available for sensible money with battery health verified. Conventional Meganes are honest value; the R.S. is a future classic for those who buy on history.
