The Velar (2017 on) is the style statement of the Range Rover family — an avant-garde slice between Evoque and Sport that still turns heads a decade after launch. Sharing its platform with the Jaguar F-Pace, it majors on design and cabin theatre, which makes the electrical checklist the heart of any used inspection.
Engines and trims
Early volume came from the D180 and D240 2.0 diesels and P250 petrol; the D300 V6 diesel is the refined heavy-hitter, and post-2021 updates brought the D200 mild hybrid and P400e plug-in hybrid. For most, a D240 or later D200 balances pace and economy; town-bound buyers can consider the petrols. Trim runs Velar, S, SE, HSE with R-Dynamic styling tiers. All get the twin-touchscreen Touch Pro Duo cabin; higher trims add the configurable ambient lighting and posher audio that suit the car’s character.
What to check before buying
Electronics lead: the twin screens, pop-out door handles, powered tailgate and full lighting suite must all work flawlessly — glitchy infotainment on early cars was common and updates help, but any dead screen is a bill. Where air suspension is fitted (V6s and many others), run the full height-cycle test. On 2.0 diesels, the Ingenium oil-dilution caveat applies: favour cars with documented frequent oil changes and reject cold-start rattles. Check the pop-out handles emerge crisply in cold weather if you can, inspect big alloys for kerbing, and scan the MOT history for suspension and tyre advisories that signal a hard life. Running costs
Expect Range Rover-grade consumables and insurance a shade below the Sport. The D300 drinks more than the fours; the P400e only makes sense plugged in nightly. Out-of-warranty electrical fixes are the budget line to respect.
Verdict
A Velar with clean history and fully functioning electronics is a wonderfully cool, comfortable thing to own. Test every button twice, favour later engines, and don’t pay design-icon money for a car with software-era gremlins.
