The full-size Discovery is Britain’s default seven-seat tow car: genuinely capable off-road, vast inside and magnificent at motorway speed. Used buyers meet three generations: Discovery 3 (2004-2009), Discovery 4 (2009-2017) — both now enthusiast territory — and the Discovery 5 (2017 on), which went monocoque, lighter and more road-focused.
Engines and trims
Discovery 3 and 4 built their reputation on the 2.7 and later 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 diesels — effortless, but with known weaknesses now well documented. The Discovery 5 launched with the 3.0 TD6 and 2.0 SD4 before settling on the D250/D300 3.0 straight-six mild-hybrid diesels, which suit the car perfectly. Trim runs S, SE, HSE and the family-focused packs; seven seats are standard on most but confirm the powered third row works. What to check before buying
On Discovery 3/4, walk in expecting age-related work: air suspension compressors and struts, EGR valves, and — critically on the 3.0 diesel — evidence the crankshaft and timing issues that afflicted some engines haven’t been ignored; a documented history of frequent oil changes is your best defence. Check chassis corrosion underneath, as these are now old workhorses. On Discovery 5, the checklist shifts to electronics and air suspension: cycle the height settings and listen for a laboured compressor, test every screen, camera and sensor, and operate the powered inner tailgate. Any Discovery that’s towed hard deserves a look at rear suspension bushes and brake condition via the MOT history. Running costs
Nothing here is cheap: expect low-30s mpg from the sixes, large tyres, and four-figure bills when air suspension or electronics fail out of warranty. Budget accordingly and the car repays you with unmatched breadth of ability.
Verdict
A cared-for Discovery 5 D300 is arguably the best all-round family-and-towing machine on the used market. Buy any Discovery on condition and paperwork rather than price — the gap between a good one and a rough one is measured in thousands.
