Engines and trims
Nearly all UK cars carry the 2.2 diesel in TD4 (150bhp) or SD4 (190bhp) forms, with manual or a stout 6-speed automatic. The auto suits the car and most were sold that way. Trim runs GS, XS, HSE and late Metropolis specials; XS hits the value sweet spot with parking sensors and decent seats. A rare front-drive eD4 exists — economical, but most buyers want the proper four-wheel-drive versions this car is known for.
What to check before buying
The known weak points are well mapped. The Haldex four-wheel-drive coupling needs its fluid and filter serviced — ask for evidence, and on the test drive listen for driveline binding on full lock. Rear differentials can whine with age; a droning rear end at 40-60mph means a rebuild or replacement, so use it to negotiate or walk. Check the tailgate and floor for water ingress, confirm the parking brake module behaves (it’s electronic and can sulk), and watch the temperature gauge — ageing cooling systems deserve inspection. Otherwise these engines run to big mileages when maintained: a thick folder of service history beats a low odometer reading, and the MOT history will show whether suspension and corrosion advisories have been accumulating. These are now 12-20-year-old cars, so a full history check for write-offs and mileage discrepancies is basic due diligence.
Running costs
Mid-30s to low-40s mpg, sane insurance, and parts availability is excellent through independent specialists — this is the cheapest Land Rover to keep healthy. Budget for the Haldex service, tyres in matched sets (essential on four-wheel-drive cars) and the odd age-related repair.
Verdict
A cared-for SD4 XS automatic is a lot of honest, capable car for the money and a gentler introduction to Land Rover ownership than anything newer. Buy on maintenance evidence and drive the rear diff carefully on the test — the good ones are keepers.
