Used Peugeot 3008 Buying Guide
The second-generation 3008 (2017-2023) transformed Peugeot’s family-SUV fortunes — a European Car of the Year with one of the best cabins in the class — and the third generation (2024 on) went fastback-styled with hybrid and electric power. For used family buyers the 2017-2023 car is the volume story and a genuine class contender.
Engines and trims
PureTech 130 petrol and BlueHDi 130 diesel are the core; the 180 diesel and 1.6 petrols add pace, and Hybrid/Hybrid4 plug-ins (225/300bhp) arrived from 2020. Trim runs Active, Allure, GT Line and GT — Allure and GT Line hit the value/kit sweet spot, and every car gets the theatrical i-Cockpit with configurable digital dials. The new-generation car majors on Hybrid 136 mild-hybrid and the long-range E-3008 electric.
What to check before buying
The 1.2 PureTech petrol’s wet timing belt is the defining issue: the belt runs in engine oil and can degrade, shedding debris that blocks the oil pickup — listen for rattles, check for warning lights, and treat documented belt replacement (or the later chain-driven update on newer engines) as gold. Insist on evidence of on-schedule oil changes with the correct specification oil — on no model does this matter more, because PureTech 3008s sold in huge numbers to families who didn’t all read the service schedule. Diesels want motorway histories (DPF), and the EAT6/EAT8 autos should shift cleanly from cold with no jerks in traffic. Plug-in Hybrid4s need charging evidence and healthy indicated range; unplugged examples will disappoint at the pumps. Family-wear checks matter: boot floor, seat backs, Isofix points and the (optional) panoramic roof’s operation. Test the i-Cockpit screens for responsiveness and dead pixels. Complete the homework with our Peugeot problems overview, a full service history review, the MOT mileage trail, and a comprehensive car check — family SUVs top the outstanding-finance tables.
Running costs
Mid-40s mpg from the PureTech, 55+ from the BlueHDi 130, and bargain commuting from a charged hybrid. Insurance and parts are mainstream-friendly. Price any missing belt service into your offer — it’s the difference between the class’s best-value SUV and a gamble.
Verdict
An Allure or GT Line BlueHDi with stamped history is one of the smartest family-SUV buys of its era; a PureTech with belt evidence runs it close. Skip anything without the paperwork, however pretty the cabin.
