Used Nissan Leaf Buying Guide

The Nissan Leaf was the car that made electric motoring mainstream, and it remains one of the cheapest routes into EV ownership on the used market. First-generation cars (2011–2017) with 24kWh and later 30kWh batteries are now genuinely inexpensive local runabouts, while the second generation (2018 on) with 40kWh and, from 2019, 62kWh e+ batteries offers usable everyday range and a far more modern cabin. The Leaf suits commuters and second-car households with home charging — buy the right one and it’s wonderfully cheap to run; buy blind and battery condition can bite.

Engines and trims

No engines here, just battery sizes — and that’s the key decision. The 24kWh original suits short local trips only; the 30kWh adds a little headroom; the 40kWh second-generation car realistically covers well over 100 miles in everyday conditions; and the 62kWh e+ is the pick for anyone regularly travelling further. Trim levels run Visia, Acenta and Tekna on both generations, with N-Connecta in the middle of the newer range. Tekna brings heated seats, Bose audio and, on later cars, the ProPilot driver-assistance system. Heated seats and steering wheel are worth having in an EV, as they warm you without draining range like cabin heating does.

What to check before buying

Battery health comes first. The dashboard shows twelve capacity bars down the right of the battery gauge — count them. A healthy car shows all twelve; each missing bar represents meaningful lost capacity, and pricing should reflect it. Nissan’s battery capacity warranty (typically eight years/100,000 miles on 40kWh and 62kWh cars, shorter on early ones) covers drops below nine bars, so check what cover remains. A battery health report from a dealer or an OBD app like LeafSpy is worth insisting on.

Ask about rapid-charging history: the Leaf’s battery lacks active cooling, so cars that have been rapid-charged heavily — ex-taxi duty is the classic case — can degrade faster, and 40kWh cars slow noticeably on repeated rapid charges on long trips. Note the Leaf uses a CHAdeMO rapid connector, which is becoming rarer on new charging sites, so plan around home and Type 2 AC charging. Beyond the battery: check the charging flap and both cables, confirm the heater works promptly (heat-pump-equipped cars are more efficient and lose less range in winter), inspect tyres for uneven wear, and remember brakes can seize from light use. On Tekna cars, make sure ProPilot and the around-view cameras function correctly, as sensor faults are cheaper to find now than later.

Running costs

Charged overnight at home on an EV tariff, a Leaf costs pennies per mile compared with any petrol supermini, and servicing is minimal — no oil changes, few moving parts, and brake wear is low thanks to regeneration. Insurance is modest for an EV, and road tax advantages have narrowed but running costs remain low overall. The main financial risk is battery replacement on elderly high-degradation cars, which is why paying a little more for a twelve-bar example with history is the smarter economy.

Verdict

A good Leaf is the best-value used EV around; a bad one is a short-range liability. Count the battery bars, probe the rapid-charging history, and match the battery size to your journeys — a 40kWh Acenta or Tekna with full health is the sweet spot for most.
