Engines and trims
S350d/S400d six-cylinder diesels dominate UK stock and suit the car perfectly; S500 petrols and plug-in S560e/S580e versions serve lower-mileage or town-centric lives. Long-wheelbase cars carry the rear-seat magic that defines ownership. AMG Line trims dominate; Premium packs layer on rear-seat comfort, Burmester audio and every driving aid of the era. What to check before buying
Everything electrical, without exception: seats (massage, ventilation, memory), screens, cameras, soft-close doors, ambient systems — a dead function on an S-Class is never cheap. Airmatic suspension must sit level overnight and cycle without groaning; walk away from any sag. Diesels are robust, but the history file must show flagship-appropriate servicing — main dealer or genuine specialist, on schedule, forever. Hybrids need range and charging verification. A full-history S350d L AMG Line is the cheapest way into genuine flagship luxury — and a gap-history S-Class is a liability wearing a three-pointed star. The service file is the car; buy accordingly.
