The original MINI Electric (Cooper SE, 2020-2024) took the F56 Hatch and swapped in a 181bhp motor and a 32.6kWh battery. Its official range was modest at around 145 miles — expect 110-130 in real use — and that’s precisely why it’s now a used bargain: early depreciation was steep, and for town-based drivers the car itself is a gem. The new-generation electric Cooper (2024 on) extends range substantially and is starting to appear used too.
Engines and trims
One motor, one battery on the original car; trim came as Level 1, 2 and 3, with Level 2 the sensible middle ground (heated seats, rear camera on many cars). Performance is a genuine hot-hatch shove away from the lights, and the handling is classic MINI. The 2024-on Cooper E and SE bring around 190-250 miles of official range respectively — worth stretching to if your driving goes beyond the city.
What to check before buying
Battery health is the whole ballgame. Ask for a State of Health report — a dealer can generate one — and treat any car that can’t demonstrate sensible range on a full charge with suspicion. Check both charging cables are present, test a rapid charge if you can (the SE peaks at 50kW), and confirm the heat pump and preconditioning work, because winter range without them dips noticeably. Otherwise the checks mirror any F56: kerbed alloys, worn front tyres from that instant torque, and full function of the central display. The regenerative braking means friction brakes can sit unused and corrode — listen for grinding on the first few stops and check discs visually. History still matters on an EV: insist on the service record and run a full car check to rule out finance and accident damage. Running costs
Charged at home, expect 4-6p per mile — transformative versus a petrol Cooper. Servicing is minimal, VED now applies like any car, and insurance sits close to a Cooper S. The short range is the only real tax: fine as a second car or urban runabout, limiting as an only car for motorway families.
Verdict
As a town car, the used MINI Electric is close to unbeatable: fast, fun, premium-feeling and now temptingly cheap. Confirm battery health, be honest about your mileage patterns, and it’s a five-star used buy.
