Used MINI Countryman Buying Guide
The Countryman is the MINI that grew into a family crossover, and it’s the brand’s best-seller on the used market. Three generations matter: the original R60 (2010-2017), the far better F60 (2017-2024), and the current, much larger U25 (2024 on), which also brought a full-electric version. It suits buyers who want MINI character with rear doors, a proper boot and a raised driving position.
Engines and trims
On the F60, the Cooper 1.5 petrol is fine around town but the Cooper S 2.0 copes better with a full load. The Cooper D and SD diesels are strong motorway tools, and the Cooper S E ALL4 plug-in hybrid offers cheap commuting if you charge at home. ALL4 four-wheel drive is worth having in the hills but adds weight and thirst elsewhere. The U25 range runs C, S and the electric E/SE with big-SUV practicality. Across all generations, options define the car — seek out heated seats, parking cameras and the larger navigation screens.
What to check before buying
Approach the R60 with care: it shares the N-series engines’ timing-chain and water-pump issues, rides harshly and feels its age inside — buy only an exceptional one. F60s are much tougher, but check the automatic shifts cleanly, the panoramic roof (where fitted) opens without graunching, and the rear seats slide and fold as they should. On the plug-in hybrid, confirm the car still achieves a sensible electric range, that both charging cables are present, and that the hybrid battery has no warning lights — a full car check plus a complete service history matters even more on complex drivetrains. U25 cars are new enough that software glitches are the main gripe; make sure infotainment, app connectivity and driver-assist systems all behave on the test drive.
Running costs

Verdict
Skip the R60 unless it’s cherished, and the Countryman becomes an easy recommendation: an F60 Cooper S or diesel with history is a characterful, practical family car that holds its value unusually well.
